This ground breaking survey, was the first of its kind, focusing on vital inland waters; Athi River, Lake Victoria, Tana River, Ewaso Ng’iro, Rift Valley, and Kerio Valley.

Alongside the #BlueSummit2024, this session made an in-depth unpacking of the inland water bodies survey and attracted a mix of panelists from the British High Commission, Cefas, Africa Centre for Health, Environment and Water Services, Collaboration of Women in Development – CWID Kenya Maritime Authority, CSOs, Development Partners and the Private Sector.

The session highlighted the key findings of the study, and the different speakers highlighted key initiatives by different actors in the inland waters, including;

✅ Government’s commitment to supporting the Blue Economy;

✅ Infrastructure provision & rehabilitation to boost inland water transport;

✅ Strategic partnerships with the UK government and private sector investments; and

✅ Enhanced surveillance and efforts toward reliable data, research, and training.

Challenges discussed:

⚠️ Lack of intersectoral policy to streamline Blue Economy activities; and

⚠️ Climate change impacts on inland waters, closely tied to the green economy.

Opportunities:

🔍 Exploration of insurance products to manage risks in inland water activities;

💡 Citizen engagement, focusing on women and youth, is crucial for maximizing benefits in the Blue Economy; and

💼 Preparing projects to attract private sector investments in the inland water sector.
